وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

And they used to persist in the great violation,

Al-Waqi'ah is Meccan, dated to the early-to-middle Meccan period. It declares the inevitable coming of the Great Event and the division of humanity into three classes on that day, addressing a Meccan society confident in this world and dismissive of the hereafter with proofs drawn from creation.
