Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideSurah as-Saff is Medinan, according to reports revealed around the period of the Battle of Uhud. One report states that some companions wished to know the deed most beloved to God, yet when the command to strive was given some grew reluctant; the verse 'Why do you say what you do not do?' came down in this setting. The surah praises striving in God's cause in tightly joined ranks and calls for consistency between word and deed.
