As-Saf 61:5

Juz 28 · Page 551

And [mention, O Muhammad], when Moses said to his people, "O my people, why do you harm me while you certainly know that I am the messenger of Allah to you?" And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

Context

Revelation context of the surah

Surah-wide

Surah as-Saff is Medinan, according to reports revealed around the period of the Battle of Uhud. One report states that some companions wished to know the deed most beloved to God, yet when the command to strive was given some grew reluctant; the verse 'Why do you say what you do not do?' came down in this setting. The surah praises striving in God's cause in tightly joined ranks and calls for consistency between word and deed.
